Ayurveda describes the fruit to possess many medicinal values. Dried and fresh fruits are used in medicines. All part of the plant is used to make various ayurvedic preparations including the fruit, seed, leaves, root, bark and flowers. Ayurveda describes gooseberry (Amla) fruit is sour and astringent in taste, with sweet, bitter and pungent secondary tastes. Its qualities are light and dry, the post-digestive effect is sweet, and its energy is cooling.
Ayurveda, gooseberry is specific to pitta due to its sweet taste and cooling energy. However, gooseberry is thought to balance vata by virtue of its sour taste, and kapha due to its astringent taste and drying action.
Rasayanas are made using gooseberries to promote longevity. And tradition says it can be used to improve digestive capacity, treat constipation, reduce fever, purify blood, reduce cough and alleviate asthma. It is also suggested for strengthening the heart and to prevent cardiac diseases. It benefits the eye and eye sight. It increases the growth of hair. It is said to enliven the body and enhance intellect.
It is the primary ingredient of the ancient herbal rasayana called the Chyawanaprasha, which is referred first in the ancient script ‘Charaka Samhita’ as a rasayana or ‘rejuvenate’ compound.
The most common use of gooseberry is in hair oils. Almost all herbal hair oils have gooseberry as its ingredient. It is also said to be a good remedy for blood cholesterol and diabetics. The patients are suggested to consume the water boiled with gooseberry along with their medicine to find a better result.
